A Reading care home has been praised by the Care Quality Commission following its latest inspection by independent inspectors.
The Hollies, in Reading Road, Burghfield Common, which has recently undergone a variety of refurbishment works, was rated ‘outstanding’ in care with a good rating in all other areas.
A CQC report judges a care home on its levels of care, responsiveness, safety, effectiveness, and leadership and includes comments from residents and their relatives.
One resident told the CQC representatives: “The staff are very friendly, we are treated very well.”
Another commented: "Staff are a lovely lot and they have good humour."
A relative spoke about how their family member was expected to die when they first came to the service. They told the CQC: “It was due to the care provided by the staff that they were ‘still here’ and everything's good about the care.”
Another relative commented: "Whenever you see staff they are smiling, when she (their relative) sees them she smiles back, it says a lot."
Residents and their families also told the CQC team they had good communication with the staff team and could speak to the registered manager at any time. They went on to praise the atmosphere in the service describing it as: "homely and open.”
A healthcare professional commented that: "staff work tirelessly to ensure people are happy and comfortable.”
Comments from the inspectors included:
“People were seen enjoying humour with the staff, they were laughing and smiling at various times throughout the inspection.”
“People knew staff members very well and they shared jokes. There was a sense of fun which transmitted from staff to people and vice versa creating an atmosphere of people being at ease.”
“Relatives informed us they were always kept informed of any changes or concerns regarding their family member and said this helped them feel happy that they were receiving the care they required. One relative told us their family member had ‘got their life back since moving into Hollies’, they added this was a great reassurance to them.”
“Staff encouraged people to be independent and we observed help and support was offered but not forced upon people if they thought they could manage something themselves.”
“A relative pointed out that their family member had become socially isolated before moving into the service and they were now joining in and socialising with others.”
Gemma Denning, the home’s registered manager, said: “The CQC’s report is testament to the passion, dedication and hard work of staff at Hollies to provide a high quality of care.
“We ensure people using the service, their relatives and our staff are provided with the opportunity to give feedback on the service.
“Meetings are held bimonthly for people living in the service and relatives are welcome to attend.”
The Hollies, which is part of Larchwood Care Homes (South) provides accommodation and nursing care for up to 58 people, some of who may be living with dementia.
